Since February is the month that Valentine’s Day falls in, you’d think that record labels would be pushing out a lot of fresh romantic music during the month. But unlike in previous years, that really isn’t the case in 2012. The closest is probably All of Me, the third album by British R&B singer Estelle. The others, by artists like African singer-activist Nneka and Dutch vocalist Clarence Milton Bekker (aka CB Milton), incorporate love as just one element of their overall message. An often enticing and enchanting vocalist, Joyce Sims hasn’t emerged as a disco diva with crossover appeal despite making some excellent singles. Born in Rochester, Sims formally studied music in college, learning a number of instruments. An agent introduced her to Ron Resnick of Sleeping Bag Records, who signed her in 1986. Her biggest hit was “Come Into My Life” in 1987, her only Top Ten record. But, both “(You Are) My All and All” and her remake of “Love Makes A Woman” with Jimmy Castor were finely crafted and nicely performed releases. They made the R&B Top 30, but didn’t earn her enough attention to break out beyond the dance market.

R&B vocalist Lloyd topped BET’s play list singing a steamy duet with Ashanti, but he got his first spins on the anything-but-steamy Radio Disney. Born January 3, 1986, in New Orleans but raised in Atlanta, Lloyd joined N-Toon — the teen pop group put together by Klymaxx’s Joyce Irby — in 1996 and appeared on their 2000 album Toon Time, released by Dreamworks. Much later — and trading influences Mickey and Donald for Marvin Gaye and R. Kelly — Lloyd’s vocal talents were recognized by L.A. Reid. When Reid became head of the Def Jam label, he turned to Irv Gotti, whose Murder Inc. label had now morphed into the Def Jam-associated The Inc. Gotti signed Lloyd and partnered the street-smart singer with fellow Inc. artist Ashanti for “Southside.”

Syleena Johnson is the daughter of ’60s R&B/blues singer Syl Johnson, part of the famed Hi Records roster. She grew up listening to Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Tina Turner, the Dells, and Mavis Staples. Early on, she developed a love for music. She performed in local bands in Chicago. She sang in her church choir at Greater Christian Unity. She worked in classical and gospel choirs as well as jazz ensembles at Drake University and at Illinois State University, where she majored in music. After having nodes removed from her vocal cords, she took two years of speech therapy. She has seven years of vocal training. All the hard work made Johnson one of her generation’s most soulful and realistic R&B singers.

Even though Nneka sings more than raps, she names hip hop as her primary musical root and most important source of inspiration, while citing artists such as Fela Kuti and Bob Marley as well as contemporary rappers Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Lauryn Hill as key influences in her own pursuit of musical recognition.
Her lyrics reflect much of her history and life in Nigeria as well as her time spent in Western Europe. Her songs stress the issues of capitalism, poverty and war and are often loaded with moral and biblical messages and references, with some music commentators comparing her to Erykah Badu, Neneh Cherry and Floetry.

There were early signs that Melba Moore would become an entertainer. The most obvious motivation was her mother, Bonnie Davis, who was also a successful singer. Moore’s mother impressed upon her that “if you don’t touch people’s hearts, it doesn’t mean anything.” Her stepfather would also become an instrumental figure in the development of her early career.

January is usually seen as a time of new beginnings, as people exit the old and enter the new with hope for good or better times to come. But it seems that when it comes to R&B music, January 2012 means that what’s old is what’s new. Fewer than half a dozen new albums are being released during the month, and of them one, Soul 2 by Seal, is a collection of remakes of Soul classics. It may be 2011, but the month of October might sound like the 1990s all over again. That’s because by sheer coincidence, a number of the artists dropping new albums this month first arrived on the music scene about two decades ago. Among them: Boyz II Men, who are releasing a double CD this month in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their debut album; then there’s R&B heartthrob Joe, who’s been around since 1993; and there’sJohnny Gill and Lalah Hathaway, both of whom released self-titled albums in 1990.
